The Valley

In summer, the landscape of Val di Sole is characterized by its environment made of an imposing and majestic scenery: eternal glaciers encircle massive and extremely high mountains, on the sides of which, descending from the heights, grow verdant forests which in the lower part leave the space to farmland cultivated with fruit trees.

Other dominant aspect of the landscape is water, of which the Val di Sole, the valleys of Pejo and Rabbi are very rich. In fact, while on the bottom of the valley flows the the Noce river, ideal sports-ground for all canoeing, rafting and kayaking lovers, from the sides of the mountains spring numerous brooks and higher up breathtaking waterfalls dot the landscape with their white leaps.

And water, both in Val di Rabbi and in Val di Pejo, have therapeutic properties which fostered in both valleys the development of bath tourism. Recently built are the two spa centres of Rabbi and Pejo.

Besides nature, also the man-made environment of Val di Sole, Pejo and Rabbi shows an exquisite alpine imprint: typical are for example the lodges made of stone and wood, integrating part of Val di Rabbi, a lateral valley.

The villages of the Val di Sole, in which up to the present days are visible the elements of the alpine villages of past times, still have buildings of historical and artistic interest as for example the many churches, Castel Caldes, the Rocca di Samoclevo and the Castle of Ossana.

In Malé, main town of the valley, there is the Museum of the Civiltà Solandra, which gathers evidence, now lost, of the life which during the past centuries was written through its mountain culture by the peoples of the Val di Sole.
